Overview
It’s not a secret: the children in your classroom differ in many ways from each other as writers.

How can you meet students’ diverse needs as writers and ensure that all of them grow as writers? In this four-part webinar, Carl Anderson will show you how – by differentiating writing instruction for them.

The webinar will on three methods for differentiating instruction: conducing 1:1 writing conferences; teaching small group lessons; and setting individualized writing goals for students that will be the focus of your writing conferences and small group lessons. These methods are discussed in many of Carl’s books, including A Teacher’s Guide to Writing Conferences K-8, How to Become a Better Writing Teacher (with Matt Glover), and the best-selling How’s It Going?: A Practical Guide to Conferring with Student Writers K-8.

During the webinar, Carl will discuss these topics:
  • The how-to’s of conducting powerful 1:1 writing conferences.
  • The how-to’s of leading effective small group writing lessons.
  • How to make time for conferences and small groups.
  • Setting assessment-based individual writing goals for students that will help you individualize writing conferences.
  • Using student writing goals to group students effectively for small-group lessons.
  • Using record-keeping forms to track student writing goals over the course of the school year.
  • Matching students to just-right mentor texts so they can learn from them effectively.
In this hands-on, practical workshop, you’ll watch and discuss videos of 1:1 writing conferences and small group lessons. And you’ll also practice setting writing goals for students by analyzing and discussing student writing, including some samples provided by participants. During the webinar, participants will learn practical strategies they can use as soon as they return to their classrooms, and which will help them become better teachers of writing.

Potential Audience:
This webinar is designed for the K-8 teacher who wants to improve or strengthen their skills as writing teachers, as well as for the literacy coaches, administrators, and curriculum specialists who support them.
