| Overview |
Over the past two decades, there has been an explosion of interest in how educators can build authentic cultures of thinking, nurture students as powerful learners, and foster deep, sustained engagement. While the use of thinking routines has grown globally across schools, museums, and universities, a common challenge persists: moving beyond superficial, one-off activities to truly integrate these practices into the fabric of learning.
In their book The Power of Making Thinking Visible, Mark Church and his colleague, Dr. Ron Ritchhart, note the importance of essential practices key to making thinking visible, namely: thinking routines, listening, questioning, and documentation. They share their research into the difference these practices make for both students and educators. This four-part online course is designed to help you plan and implement these practices for maximum effect. When leveraged powerfully, thinking routines do more than just engage—they advance the broader goal of creating classrooms where student thinking is consistently visible, deeply valued, and actively promoted. We will explore these core concepts while diving into several of the new routines presented in the book.

| About Mark Church |
| Dedicated to transforming the day-to-day experience of learners, Mark Church partners with schools globally to foster deep, sustainable cultures of thinking. He believes that the key to student engagement lies in making thinking visible and encourages teachers to become lifelong students of their learners and themselves as they shape the story of learning in their classrooms and schools. In addition to his role as a board member of the Cultures of Thinking Foundation, Mark is a consultant and course instructor with Harvard Project Zero’s Making Thinking Visible and Cultures of Thinking initiatives. He brings a wealth of classroom and international experience to his work and is the co-author, alongside Ron Ritchhart, of Making Thinking Visible (2011) and The Power of Making Thinking Visible (2020). |
