| Overview |
In international school settings, a common challenge for EAL Directors and coordinators is the systemic over-reliance on literal translation. While Google Translate or peer translation can serve as immediate survival tools, treating translation as a default instructional practice often isolates languages, limits deep cognitive engagement, and reinforces a deficit view of what multilingual students can do.
Dr. Ardell leads educators through an exploration of the crucial distinction between translating (a mechanical tool) and translanguaging (a powerful pedagogy). Designed specifically for the international EAL context, participants will define translanguaging and examine the fundamental mindset shift required to move past rigid language separation toward truly equitable, inclusive practices. Walk away with practical, high-impact strategies to synthesize and immediately apply this pedagogy in your diverse classrooms. |
| Agenda: |
Session 1: Evaluate the theoretical frameworks and perspectives of translanguaging to distinguish this shift from traditional, translation-heavy EAL instructional methods.
Session 2: Analyze real-world translanguaging case studies to identify specific pedagogic moves through use of a translanguaging resource guide.
Session 3: Engage in collaborative practice to adapt existing learning objectives, utilizing peer-feedback cycles to integrate translanguaging strategies into EAL lesson design.
Session 4: Develop advocacy and scaling techniques to communicate successes with colleagues and administration, fostering a school-wide commitment to linguistic justice. |
