Overview: |
How do we curate spaces to cultivate curiosity yet showcase the messiness of learning? In this two day series, Jessica Vance will guide you through the foundational tenets of data collection, evidencing and authentic documentation of learning leveraging space as a third teacher. From outdoor learning to the walls that line our hallways and classrooms, we’ll investigate the purpose of the “third teacher” and how making and keeping thinking visible harnesses the agency and ownership of all learners in our communities. Far from Pinterest worthy walls and displays, both inquiry leaders and classroom teachers will compare and contrast inquiry schools around the globe reflecting on the ways the pedagogy of constructivism and our own values are reflected in our spaces.

Exploring, Questioning, and Documenting with Learning Walls We’ll answer the following essential questions during the session:
- How do we authentically plan and gather authentic evidence?
- How can learning walls support a richer assessment practice?
- What greater impact does this documentation practice have on deeper learning?
- In what ways can learning walls support competency development alongside our curriculum and content?
- How can learning walls be the vehicle to encourage student agency and engage Students?

- Session 3 What is a learning wall: Unpacking tenets of space as a third teacher

Day Two:
- Session 1 Reflection as a form of assessment: Flexing the skills of reflection
- Session 2 Flip the feedback: Shifting the weight and role of feedback in the inquiry classroom
- Session 3 Collaborative structures for more collaborative communities: Whoever is doing the bulk of talking is doing the bulk of learning
- Session 4 Putting it all together: Group coaching and synthesis of learning

About Jessica Vance |
With a professional teaching and leadership background in both the private and public international schools (IB PYP Educator & PYP Coordinator), Jessica brings a unique perspective to her role as education consultant with schools and districts around the globe while remaining grounded in an authentic practice as program coordinator located in Austin, Texas.
Her passion for student-centered learning, collaboration, and coaching stems from the students themselves, finding inspiration in their natural curiosity as they authentically engage in learning experiences inside and outside of the classroom. Jessica strongly believes in the power of leading with a lens of inquiry, facilitating innovative professional learning opportunities and coaching sessions that provide the space for educators to collaborate and reflect, while supporting their professional growth as inquiry practitioners.
