Overview
Join Dr. Jan Burkins, of The Six Shifts, for a dynamic 3-day institute created to help K–5 educators unlock the reading brain by exploring and integrating five essential, science-aligned keys to effective literacy instruction. Grounded in her work from the bestselling Shifting the Balance series (co-authored with Kari Yates and Katie Egan Cunningham), this institute is designed to bridge research and practice-empowering educators with the depth of knowledge they need to develop sound instructional routines that make word reading easier, comprehension deeper, and learning more joyful.

Through interactive learning, powerful examples, and collaborative planning, participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how reading develops in the brain-and how to align instruction in ways that are practical, powerful, and brain-friendly.

Agenda:
Day 1: Foundations that Empower
You will begin with an energizing, hands-on experience exploring how the reading brain works-making the science both visible and usable. The model of the brain you develop with Jan will ground all the subsequent work during the institute. Next, you’ll dive into Key 1: Language Comprehension and Key 2: Vocabulary Development, two fundamental drivers of reading success across all grades.

Day 2: Skills that Stick
On day two, Jan will unpack Key 3: Word Recognition, Key 4: Fluency, and Key 5: Reading Comprehension. She will explore - through clear explanations, helpful metaphors, and interactive experiences - what reading science reveals about these essential components. She will share practical routines that help students learn and apply the skills they must have to grow into engaged, empowered, and proficient readers.

Day 3: Lessons that Last
The final day brings together everything you’ve learned so far! Jan will walk you through text-set and lesson design, integrating all five keys. You will have opportunities to apply what you’ve learned, connecting it to your classroom, your curriculum, and your students. You'll leave equipped with tools, ideas, clarity, and a solid sense of purpose.

What You'll Gain:
  • A practical understanding of how the brain learns to read
  • Understanding of the most important aspects of effective literacy instruction
  • Concrete routines, instructional moves, and planning tools
  • Renewed confidence, connection, and instructional clarity

Potential Audience:
  • K–5 teachers
  • Literacy specialists and coaches
  • School leaders
  • Educators at any stage in their Science of Reading journey
