Overview
How do we accelerate student learning so they become skilled writers who can meet rigorous writing standards?

The answer is to include high-engagement units in your writing curriculum. Research shows that when students are highly engaged, they learn much more about what they’re studying, retain what they learn, and can better apply it in the future.

In this four-part webinar series, Carl Anderson will show you how to teach several high-engagement units that are guaranteed to excite your students and at the same time teach them about the most important aspects of the craft and process of writing.

During the webinar, Carl will discuss these topics:
  • The link between student engagement and achievement.
  • What are the pillars of engagement that make writing units engaging?
  • How to make units already in your repertoire more engaging.
  • Which specific units are the most engaging for students?
  • How to teach several high engagement writing units (Participant interest in specific units will be taken into consideration, and may include: genre studies such as fantasy writing, feature articles, and poetry; craft studies such as what makes writing interesting, punctuation study, and a study of writing complex sentences (yes, that can be highly engaging!); process studies such as revision and reading like a writer.); and others.
  • How to gather a stack of engaging mentor texts for a writing unit.
  • How to write your own “process text” for a unit that not only shows students how to navigate the writing process, but also helps them see you as a writer they want to learn from.
  • How to project high-engagement units on your own.
By the end of this hands-on, practical workshop, you’ll know how to teach several high-engagement units that will bring new energy and lots of learning into your writing classroom.
