| Children bring their intuitive knowledge of mathematics to school. How might we create more opportunities to listen deeply, notice, and name what children CAN do before making instructional decisions that build on what they know? When our teaching focuses on helping children cultivate healthy math identities they begin to see themselves as capable, competent, and confident mathematicians. A CGI math framework spotlights student participation in order to gain insight on how children think about mathematics and how their thinking develops along documented learning trajectories. | |||||||||

| Session 1 - What is CGI Math and a Closer Look at Children’s Thinking About Addition and Subtraction Session 2 - What does a Math Workshop Look / Sound Like and A Closer Look at Children’s Thinking About Multiplication and Division Session 3 - Differentiation and Extending Multiplication and Division & Counting Collections Session 4 - Children’s Thinking About Fractions and A Closer Look at the Benefits of Choral Counting In this series of four, two-hour workshops we’ll study the essential practices that underpin a CGI framework and spotlight on children’s mathematical thinking and ideas. We’ll spend ample time investigating children’s brilliant solution strategies, by studying conference videos and work samples. We’ll also explore progress monitoring tools and resources that help educators and students co-author math tasks that foster productive struggle. During the last part of each session, attendees will create a brief math task to practice with 1-2 case study students and bring back evidence (student work, photo, video) of learning to share with colleagues at the start of the next class. |

| Jessica Martin | |||||||||
| Jessica Martin is a former classroom teacher, Resident Advisor at University of California at Los Angeles Teacher Education Program, staff developer at Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, Columbia University, and CEO of the education consulting organization at Growing Educators. Jessica now partners with K-12 learning communities as a thinking partner in English Language Arts, Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) math, and inquiry-based instruction. Her first book, Strategic Classroom Design (Heinemann, 2019), was inspired by equity-minded educators committed to co-creating incredible spaces that engage and uplift all learners.
