SESSION 1: CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE APPROACHES TO POSITIVE CLASSROOM CLIMATE |
Who are we teaching, and how are we honoring students’ unique experiences? What strategies promote positive classroom culture in-person and online? How can we regularly support academic development for our students while staying connected with their social-emotional needs?
Culturally responsive teaching is all about considering who your learners are and how to incorporate their interests, experience, learning modality, and readiness into your learning experiences. In this session we unpack strategies for forming strong relationships, practicing mindfulness, and engaging in discussion of current events in ways that enable students to look at issues from multiple perspectives and think about how they can impact their world.
Each strategy will be examined through the needs of the myriad types of learners in our classrooms as well as age-levels, K-12. Additionally, we consider adaptations for various assets and needs of classroom contexts, such as time, cultural diversity, class size, teacher persona, and technology.
Learning outcomes:
- Explore strategies for knowing students well, check-in's, student-student connection.
- Discover more about mindfulness practices, positive affirmations, and failing forward.
- Consider ways to support K-12 students in discussion of current events and reflection.

SESSION 2: CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE APPROACHES TO PLANNING |
What can I do to incorporate more culturally responsive / sustaining teaching in my planning? What new and engaging strategies are a good fit for my students? How can I harness students’ innate curiosity about the world to promote action that extends and supports the curriculum? How do I make room for youth voice and choice even as I plan ahead?
While planning is critical, so is making sure students have opportunities as co-creators for what they study and how they apply their knowledge in a real world context. Based on what you know about your students, we give guidance on how to plan for appropriate content, process, and products that align with where students are and where you want them to go with their learning. All of this occurs with highly engaging experiences that strengthen competence and confidence as students grow and maintain joy as learners.
Learning Outcomes:
- Explore diverse approaches to collaborative planning.
- Examine how to use assessment to inform planning in ways that are meaningful for your students.
- Develop and expand Inquiry-Based Learning opportunities and highly engaging research methods that put student voice first and emphasize specific knowledge, skills, and dispositions.
