Overview:
In this workshop, participants will explore strategies and practices that help create equitable spaces and instructional decisions that place students at the center of the learning. We will identify ways to create spaces inclusive of multiple perspectives and experiences while asking the right questions that engage the learner and center their experiences. In addition, this workshop will discuss how gradually releasing learning from being teacher dependent to student independence leads to student’s owning their learning journey.
Objectives:
Participants will
  • Learn how equitable practices and strategies center student voices and experiences in the learning
  • Identify ways to leverage classroom design to increase student engagement
  • Understand how gradual releasing the responsibility of learning strengthens improves student agency

Dr. Towanda Harris
Dr. Towanda Harris is currently the Director of Professional Learning and an adjunct professor of reading and writing and brings over twenty years of experience to the education world. Towanda is the author of The Right Tools: A Guide to Selecting, Evaluating, and Implementing Classroom Resources and Practices. Educators rely on her wisdom about how to find resources that meet their teaching goals and match their understanding of their students’ needs. Teachers turn to her to learn how to employ those resources, blend them with best practices, and help all students reach their full potential. In addition, Towanda is a Heinemann PD provider, a member of The Educator Collaborative, an advisor for the #G2Great Twitter chat, and an advisory board member of the We Are Teachers organization. Some of her workshops include the International Literacy Association Conference, National Reading Recovery Conference, Indiana State Reading Conference, and the National Council of Teachers of English.
