SESSION 1: THE ROLE OF CONCEPTS IN LEARNING (2 HOURS):
  • Explore the science of learning to understand how concepts aid retention and transfer of learning.
  • Identify disciplinary concepts in a variety of modern situations or problems.
  • Apply the use of expansive framing to harness students’ prior knowledge in new learning situations.
  • Investigate how questions can guide learning and point student attention to deeper structural patterns of how the world is organized.
SESSION 2: PROMOTING CONCEPTUAL TRANSFER (2 HOURS)
  • Understand how conceptual learning helps students unlock new situations.
  • Determine specific instances, case studies, historical contexts, or current events, where students will apply their learning to unlock a new situation.
  • Find or create novel contexts where students can apply conceptual understanding.
SESSION 3: APPLICATION (3 HOURS)

JULIE STERN
JULIE STERN is passionate about synthesizing the best of education research into practical tools that support educators in breaking free of the industrial model of schooling and moving toward teaching and learning that promotes sustainability, equity, and well-being. She is the best-selling author of Learning that Transfers, Visible Learning for Social Studies with Hattie, Fisher, Frey and Tools for Teaching Conceptual Understanding, Elementary and Secondary. She is the thought leader behind the global workshop series Making Sense of Learning Transfer and is a certified trainer in Visible Learning Plus. She is a James Madison Constitutional Fellow and taught social studies for many years in Washington, DC and her native Louisiana. Julie moves internationally every few years with her husband, a US diplomat, and her two young sons.
ELEMENTARY
Kirtida Kale is an Elementary Specialist for Team LTT. Kirtida is passionate about nurturing student inquiry and agency. With over 15 years of experience in elementary schools, she has served as a PYP coordinator, workshop leader, and co-facilitated the process of becoming an IB authorized school. She is a life-long learner and global collaborator.
Jessica Mattei is the Elementary Lead for Team LTT. Jessica is a certified curriculum supervisor and principal currently teaching in Pennsylvania. She has over 14 years of experience teaching Kindergarten through Grade 5 and leads instructional design in her school and district. With a passion for teaching and learning, most notably mathematics instruction, she is fascinated with improving curriculum to meet the diverse needs of all learners.
STEM
Kayla Duncan is the Mathematics Lead for Team LTT. With several years experience as a personalized learning coach, she enjoys employing design thinking and systems thinking to create long-term impact on student learning. She is an author of Learning That Transfers: Designing Curriculum for a Changing World.
Julia Briggs is the Science Lead for Team LTT, she has taught middle and high school Science and Chemistry for over a decade. Julia is originally from the UK and has taught both British and IB programmes, she is an author of the On Your Feet Guide to Learning Transfer, and is a Spanish speaker.
HUMANITIES
Nichelle Pinkney is the Social Studies Lead for Team LTT. In her 15 year career in education she has served as a high school history teacher, department chair, AVID Coordinator, online course creator & instructor, intermediate instructional specialist, and district level curriculum coordinator. She is an author of Civil Discourse: Conversations for Stronger Communities.
Trevor Aleo is the English Language Arts lead for Team LTT and co-author of Learning That Transfers: Designing Curriculum for a Changing World. In addition to teaching at the high school and middle school level, he has designed instructional materials for the Virginia Department of Education and facilitated district level curriculum projects.
SPECIALISTS
Carmel Lim-Torres is the Visual and Performing Arts Lead for Team LTT. Carmel is a practicing artist as well as art educator, with more than 15 years teaching at middle, high, and university levels. She earned a BFA in Sculpture with a distinction. She is a repatriated third culture kid growing up in five different countries and an IB alumna. Carmel now lives in Manila and loves to share her passion for the process of art making and exploring the world.
Mihai Catrinar is the Physical Education & Health Lead for Team LTT. Mihai is an adventurer and explorer who loves to promote well-being, health, and fitness through movement, play, and goal setting. He is skilled in technology, curriculum development, and professional learning. Originally from Romania, Mihai now teaches internationally as an IB educator, workshop leader, and department head.
