Overview:
Children bring their intuitive knowledge of mathematics to school. How might we create more opportunities to listen deeply, notice, and name what children CAN do before making instructional decisions that build on what they know? When our teaching focuses on helping children cultivate healthy math identities they begin to see themselves as capable, competent, and confident mathematicians. A CGI Math Framework spotlights student participation in order to gain insight on how children think about mathematics and how their thinking develops along documented learning trajectories.
Agenda:
Session 1 - Children’s Thinking About Addition and Subtraction

Session 2 - Children’s Thinking About Multiplication and Division

Session 3 - Extending Multiplication and Division & Counting Collections

Session 4 - Children’s Thinking About Fractions and Choral Counting

During the last part of each session, attendees will create a brief math task to practice with 2-4 case study students and bring back evidence (student work, photo, video) of learning to share with colleagues at the start of the next class.
Potential Audience:
K-8 educators, curriculum supervisors, teacher leaders, and teacher trainers.
