As a writing teacher, you know that your students are at different levels and have different needs. How can you provide just the right instruction that will help all of your students move forward as writers?

In this four-session series, Carl Anderson will show you how to answer this question: by having daily one-on-one writing conferences with your students, whether in your classroom or online. You’ll learn how conferences can help you discover and assess what students are trying to do as writers and then teach them what they need to learn about writing, from navigating the stages of the writing process to the qualities of writing in narrative, informational, and persuasive genres.

During each Session, Carl will
  • Discuss the reasons why conferring is the most important teaching you can do with student writers
  • Explain key conferring principles
  • Discuss how to encourage and support student talk in conferences
  • Talk about how to make quick and accurate assessments of students as you confer
  • Explain methods for teaching powerfully in conferences
  • Discuss the importance of conferring with mentor texts
  • Talk about conference record-keeping systems
During the session, you'll watch and analyze videos of Carl conferring with students in different grade levels, and you'll also read and discuss student writing samples to get some practice with the kind of assessment that will help you confer powerfully with students.

Also, throughout the sessions, Carl will give you tips for how to confer effectively on online platforms such as Zoom or Google Meet, and how to use the tools that these kinds of platforms give you to make all the important conferring moves.

By the end of the series, you'll have learned numerous conferring strategies you can use the next day when you work with your students.
