| Are you (or the educators you support) equipped to engage in discourse around relevant topics of the day, even those that some consider contentious? This series will combine research based best practices and years of classroom and supervisor experience in laying out a "how to" guide that supports student engagement in the classroom. This series will focus on how to instill these practices day one or day one hundred and fifty. We will discuss how educators should start planning for civil discourse before the first student enters their classroom in the fall and work to align these conversations to themes, C3 Framework skills, and performance expectations throughout the year in preparation of the toughest topics that your students will face. | |||||||||
| Session 1: Why, Discourse? (2 hours) | |||||||||
| This session will focus on research behind the purpose and intent for civil discourse while starting to dig into the C.U.B.E.D. (Courage, Understanding, Belonging, Empathy, Discourse) approach that is outlined in our book. | |||||||||
| Session 2: Laying the Foundation for Discourse (2 hours) | |||||||||
| This session will focus on how educators should start planning for civil discourse. Diving deeply into building class communities and examining the LET’S ACT Framework with time to plan for implementation. | |||||||||
| Session 3: Building up to Discourse (2 hours) | |||||||||
| This session will focus on research based strategies that support student conversation as well as ways to use our G.U.I.D.E. approach to develop the skills students need to participate in these conversations. | |||||||||

| Joe Schmidt | |||||||||
| Joe Schmidt is the co-author of Civil Discourse: Classroom Conversations for Stronger Communities. He has worked as a high school teacher and college professor for elementary pre-service teachers, and has also held roles in district and state-level leadership in support of both rural and urban schools. Throughout his career, he has served in a variety of leadership positions with social studies-related organizations across the United States. | |||||||||
| Nichelle Pinkney | |||||||||
| Nichelle Pinkney is the co-author of Civil Discourse: Classroom Conversations for Stronger Communities. She has been a social studies educator for the past 16 years as a classroom teacher to mostly recently a K-12 curriculum director. She has presented and trained teachers nationally and internationally, through her work as the Social Studies Lead for Learning that Transfers (LTT). Nichelle holds a Masters of Art degree in Educational Administration from Lamar University and a Bachelor's degree from Salem College in Sociology, Women’s Studies (minor). Nichelle has found passion in providing equitable education to every student. She has worked to revise curriculum to ensure that it is diverse, equitable and inclusive for all students and teachers. | |||||||||
