Assignment Makeover Studio
by Alan November

20th - 21st March 2017, Melbourne

This two day workshop with teams of educators (3 – 7 per team) provides a template to redesign assignments to be more rigorous, more motivating and to support a culture where students take increasing responsibility to own their learning. Much of this work is based on Alan's New York Times best selling book, "Who Owns the Learning". It also draws on work we have developed called the First Five Days of School. In this model, teachers begin the school year by front-loading skills that can pay off all year such as teaching students how to ask questions.

The design template is based on six questions that are designed to move us beyond the "$1.000 pencil.
Transformation Questions:

  1. Did the assignment build capacity for critical thinking on the web?

  2. Did the assignment develop new lines of inquiry?

  3. Are there opportunities for students to make their thinking visible?

  4. Are there opportunities to broaden the perspective of the conversation with authentic audiences from around the world?

  5. Is there an opportunity for students to create a contribution (purposeful work)?

  6. Do students own their learning?

The focus of the workshop focuses on redesigning existing assignments teachers currently give students. The flow of the two days is to develop capacity to support all six design ideas embedded in the Transformation Questions. Various apps are used to support this work such as Verso and Prism. At the conclusion of the two days educators have created a series of assignments that support their curriculum that they can immediately apply to expand the boundaries of learning for their students.
Follow Up Webinar:
Effective professional development that impacts student learning ensures that teachers are provided the opportunity to engage with their new skills/knowledge and then reflect on their practice. After this weekend's conference with Alan November, he will provide a webinar for participants to share the impact of this weekend's "takeaways" in addition to reconnecting with participants from workshop.
