Often teachers may have rigid expectations for how small group instruction is supposed to be planned and how it ‘should’ look and sound, when in fact, small group instruction has so many variations and possibilities. In this four-part series, Kathy Collins will take participants on a tour of small group instruction models which will enable teachers to be nimble and flexible as they plan instruction to support the readers in their classrooms. Kathy and participants will plan different series of small group instruction sessions that will serve as templates and mentor texts for teachers to customize for their own readers.

Some concepts that will be covered throughout the four sessions:
  • using conferring data to plan small groups
  • planning small groups for a wide variety of readers’ needs
  • creating small groups that include readers of varied abilities
  • framing small group instruction with an inquiry mindset
