Jay will present ideas from his recent book, Designing Authentic Performance Tasks and Projects (ASCD, 2020). This session will examine the characteristics of quality performance tasks and explorea set of practical and proven tools for the development of performance tasks to engage students in meaningful learning and for assessing important learning outcomes (e.g., 21st century skills) that often fall “through the cracks” of conventional testing. A compilation of excellent web-based resources will also be shared.
Scoring tools, such as performance lists and rubrics can be used to improve student performance as well as evaluate it. In this session, we’ll examine the characteristics of three different types of scoring tools – criterion-based performance lists, holistic and analytic rubrics – and consider the advantages and limitations of each. We’ll review procedures for using rubrics to achieve fair, valid, and reliable evaluation and grading of student learning. Finally, we’ll examine ways of using rubrics as tools for teaching and learning as well as evaluation. A compilation of recommended web-based and print resources will be shared. |
