Overview:
For twenty-five years, the award-wining Understanding by Design framework has been used world-wide to develop effective and engaging curriculum. Join UbD co-author, Jay McTighe, to explore a set of key educational questions: What is understanding and how does it differ from "knowing"? What do we want students to understand and be able to do? What content is most worth understanding? How will we know that students truly understand and can apply their learning in meaningful ways? How might we design our courses and units to emphasize understanding rather than "coverage"?
Objectives:
Participants will...
  • explore the logic of "backward design" - a 3-stage model for the development of well-aligned curriculum;
  • apply criteria for selecting curriculum priorities and determining the "big ideas" worthy of deep understanding;
  • use essential questions to frame curriculum and focus on "big ideas";
  • review practical tools for designing authentic performance tasks;
  • examine the A.M.T. model for teaching for understanding and transfer; and
  • explore a variety of excellent web-based resources for UbD
Teachers will gain practical and proven ideas and resources for creating engaging and effective curriculum units.

School leaders will receive practical and proven ideas and resources for leading and sustaining UbD in their settings.
