If you are a head of school, curriculum leader, academic officer, school head, division head, department chair, you likely you hear the concern that we have a jam-packed bloated curriculum that is overwhelming teachers and students. Innovation is only possible if there is "room" in the program to engage in learner centered opportunities. This workshop will examine an approach to help international schools engage in making concrete choices addressing: What to cut out? What to cut back? What to consolidate? What to create? The session will focus on a five-step process for formally reviewing curriculum that can be adapted to your school setting. Streamlining is certainly essential but it is not enough. We will consider approaches to encourage innovation and ways to partner with learners in their projects. The session will include tips for grouping teachers and creating time in your schedule for the reviews. It is a fresh take on shifting the actual writing of curriculum in a narrative approach, deliberate connections across the school year and most importantly in student-friendly language with images in a storyboard framework.

The ideas are from Heidi's ground-breaking new book, Streamlining the Curriculum: Using the Storyboard Approach to Frame Compelling Learning Journeys, co-authored with Allison Zmuda.
KEY TOPICS:
  • What it is to streamline and why we need it
  • How to ignite interest with staff and students and build coaching capacity
  • What makes a quality curriculum and how it is designed to directly impact audience (students and families)
  • The shift required to move from old-style unit isolation to deliberate a narrative approach
  • Process for translating old-style curriculum into student-accessible language
  • Role of standards converted to learning targets and move to authentic assessments
