Every writing teacher has this question: How do I teach my students to write well? The answer? Teach with mentor texts. To help students learn how to craft their writing in effective and beautiful ways, students need to see and study mentor texts in mini-lessons, small group lessons, and individual writing conferences in the writing workshop. In this series of virtual workshops, Carl Anderson will explain how you can use mentor texts to teach students the craft of narrative, informational, and persuasive writing. You’ll learn about seven practical steps you can take to integrate mentor texts into your teaching:
  • Understand what it means to “read like a writer”
  • How to find and select good mentor texts
  • How to analyze mentor texts to find multiple teaching points
  • Strategies for “immersing” (or familiarizing) students with mentor texts at the beginning of a unit of study
  • How to do whole-class craft study
  • How to teach with mentor texts in mini-lessons and small group lessons
  • Taking on the special challenges of conferring with mentor texts
As part of the series, you’ll study a variety of excellent narrative, informational, and persuasive mentor texts. You’ll also watch videos that bring to life how to do whole-class craft study, and how to use mentor texts in mini-lessons and writing conferences. Also, throughout the sessions, Carl will give you tips for how to teach with mentor texts effectively on online platforms such as Zoom or Google Meet. By the end of the webinar series, you'll have learned numerous strategies you can use to teach with mentor texts.
