Overview:
As the demography of international schools continues to change with the result that every classroom has more multilingual learners of varying language proficiencies than ever before, it is necessary to rethink principles and practices of the past so that all school leaders and teachers develop responsive mindsets and actions. This workshop uses ten research-based and practical principles focused on multilingual learners’ strengths to inform professional practices.
TIME INVOLVED:
There are four synchronous sessions of 2 hours each and one final synchronous session of 1 hour to celebrate participants’ leadership application task. Dr. Rojas will asynchronous personalized guidance and feedback between sessions four and five. The total number of hours is 10 hours.
Agenda:
SESSION 1
Explores research-based shifts in ways of thinking about what we have done in the past and what we need to do differently now and in the future with multilingual learners and why (paradigms and principles)
SESSIONS 2 - 4
Connects these principles with sustainable pedagogical practices across all grades and disciplines
SESSION 5
Celebrates how small shifts and actions can lead to huge differences in end results
PLATFORM, MATERIALS, & RESOURCES :
Participants will connect through the ZOOM meetings platform. They will need a laptop, headphones / earbuds and a quiet space to be during the synchronous sessions. All participants will be issued with a link to the course that will not be shareable with others. Participants will agree to use the video and sound function to enable full participation. The workshop will not be recorded. Customized resource materials will be made available to participants.

  • Pre K-12 EAL teachers and school leaders interested in advocating and improving learning in a school with majority multilingual populations.
  • Pre K-12 classroom teachers with a passion for inquiring into multilingual learners’ school success.
 
DR. VIRGINIA PAULINE ROJAS
Virginia Rojas, Ed.D. conducts professional training on effective programs and strategies for English learners from pre-school through grade 12 for ESL and classroom teachers alike.

As an ASCD faculty member, Dr. Rojas uses the backwards design curriculum model to help teachers design high-challenge, high-support learning experiences for strengthening English learners' second language proficiency and academic achievement.

She provides professional development trainings, job-embedded coaching and demonstration lessons, and conducts linguistic audits of EAL (English as an Additional Language) program. She has worked in over 200 international schools throughout the world as well as with school districts in the US and Canada.

Dr. Rojas is the author of Strategies for Success with English Language Learners: An Action Toolkit for Classroom and ESL Teachers published by ASCD (2007) and of Educating English Language Learners: Connecting Language, Literacy, and Culture (2010), ASCD DVD Series.
