Overview:
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) represent the largest conceptual shift in teaching science in decades. The addition of engineering design and an increased emphasis on the practices of science could revolutionize science education. However this revolution will only occur if teachers understand the standards and make changes in their classrooms. This two-day workshop will focus on 3-Dimensional instructional strategies that realize the potential of the NGSS. Special consideration will be given to the cross-cutting concepts as a both a thematic and practical lens to drive science instruction. Assessments aligned to the new standards will be shared and participants will help build assessments of their own. Participants should come prepared to do science!

Objectives:
This workshop is designed for K-12 teachers of science working at international schools. The workshop progresses through the stages of UbD beginning with Stage 0 - Why should we change? Participants in the workshop will:

  • Gain a better understanding of the NGSS
  • View, screen and create 3-dimensional performance assessments
  • Develop the framework for an NGSS storyline
