| Making Thinking Visible in Early Childhood: Exploring Powerful Purposes & Practices | |||||||||
| Creating an early years environment where young children’s thinking is visible, valued, and actively promoted is a worthy goal and of great interest to many educators. Doing so provides insight into what and how early years learners are making sense of their world. Attention to thinking in the early years helps educators make instructional choices that feel well-fitted to the children they serve. At the same time, attending to children’s thinking in intentional ways helps them develop foundational thinking dispositions that will serve them well now and long into the future. This workshop is designed specifically to reflect upon the power of making thinking visible from an early childhood teaching and learning perspective. Participants will explore and engage in a variety of making thinking visible practices to illustrate where and how their use could be powerful in the settings with young learners. We'll showcase a diverse range of early years contexts where educators have created conditions that fosters curiosity, collaboration, and independence. Specifically, we’ll look into key practices including thinking routines, listening, questioning, and documentation. | |||||||||

| Mark Church, co-author of Making Thinking Visible and The Power of Making Thinking Visible, will illustrate various visible thinking practices including thinking routines, questioning, listening, and documentation. Participants will consider what difference paying attention to student thinking makes for early years learning and how educators can plan to use these practices to maximum effect. When used powerfully, making thinking visible not only provides teachers with a set of practices to engage young children, but helps advance a broader goal to create classrooms where students’ thinking is visible, valued, and actively promoted. | |||||||||
