Documentation in the Early Years:
An Active Process of Seeking Deeper Understanding

Overview:
  Documentation is a powerful strategy in early childhood education, a complex and significant process that invites us to reflect on and interpret the meaning and significance of children’s learning.

When understood as an intentional and pedagogical approach, documentation offers early years educators the opportunity to explore the relationship between educational strategies and the intertwined complexities of children’s thinking, learning and relationships.

This workshop will allow teachers to consider the process and purpose of documentation in international educational contexts. With a strong focus on dialogue and interpretation, teachers are asked to come ready to share and discuss elements of their own documentation experience and practice.

  • Support authentic assessment practices
  • Sustain collaboration and understanding
  • Act as an important tool for professional development
  • Advocate for the rights, potentials and competencies of all children
 
Potential Audience
  Early Years Educators, Leaders and Curriculum Coordinators who have specific responsibility for the Early Years.

Participants are asked to bring:
  • A sample of raw documentation from their context.
  • A favourite teacher resource book on documenting or assessing young children’s learning.
  • A digital device for accessing shared resources.
 
Trainer’s Profile:
  Fiona Zinn is an Education Consultant based in Australia. Drawing on 25 years experience in the early childhood, primary and tertiary sectors, Fiona works with educators around the world to boldly re-imagine early years pedagogy, curriculum and learning environments in response to research. Much of this work finds resonance with the educational project of Reggio Emilia, Italy but is also shaped by interpretation and experience across a wide range of contexts.

Fiona consults extensively with International Schools, has spent a decade as an invited sessional lecturer at the University of Melbourne Graduate School of Education, is elected to the National Committee of the Reggio Emilia Australia Information Exchange and collaborates with the International Baccalaureate as a Professional Development Educator, Field Representative, Curriculum Consultant and Workshop Developer.
