On September 19th, join Carl Anderson and Matt Glover for a “book party” celebrating the publication of Carl’s newest book, Teaching Fantasy Writing: Lessons that Inspire Student Engagement and Creativity K-6 (Corwin Press) During the session, Carl and Matt will begin by discussing the importance of including high-engagement, high-energy writing units of study in a year-long writing curriculum—such as writing fantasy, a genre that children love to write but rarely get a chance to do so in school. Then Matt will pose a series of questions to Carl about fantasy writing, including: What kind of expressive possibilities does writing fantasy offer children? How does fantasy writing help students develop their creativity? How can fantasy writing accelerate student growth in writing? What are the key teaching moves in a study of fantasy writing? How does Teaching Fantasy Writing help teachers make these moves? What have you learned about teaching fantasy to primary students? Upper grade students? What are some of the obstacles that get in the way of including fantasy in writing curriculums? What are some ways to overcome these obstacles? By the end of the session, you will gain new understandings about the power of teaching fantasy writing, as well as strategies you can use to get started with your own study.   Carl Anderson Carl Anderson is an internationally recognized expert in writing instruction for grades K-8. He works as a consultant in schools and districts around the world.
