Student Voice and Aspirations

Overview:
  Dr. Quaglia will deliver a two-day seminar and share his groundbreaking work regarding student aspirations and the importance and power of student voice. He will discuss data he has collected from thousands of students and the impact that data has for each and every one of us. His presentation will have implications regarding the role of educators and policy makers, how schools are organized, and how we assess the teaching and learning environment. His fundamental belief is that we can and must learn from students if we are to ensure all students are reaching their fullest academic, personal and social potential.
Day One: Understanding the Dynamics of Student Voice and Aspirations
  Participants will be introduced to the importance and impact of Student Voice in schools and gain an understanding of the Aspirations Framework. Participants will be involved in learning activities to fully understand the dynamic nature of Aspirations and how to utilizing Student Voice as a tool for improving teaching and learning.

  • Appreciate the importance and potential of Student Voice.
  • Recognize the relationships between Student Voice, Aspirations, and learning.
  • Commit to Student Voice actions.
Day Two: Cultivating Engagement and Letting the Leader in Students Emerge
  Engagement takes root when students are deeply involved in the learning process by showing enthusiasm and desire to learn new things, and willingness to take positive, healthy steps toward the future. Participants in day two will be introduced to the Guiding Principle of Engagement and through a series of high-energy exercises, they will learn the importance of fostering Fun & Excitement, Curiosity & Creativity, and Spirit of Adventure for all students.

  • Learn how Engagement leads to a better teaching environment and supports academic achievement.
  • Reflect upon your own current practice and develop ideas for improvement.

Presenter Profile:
  Dr. Russell J. Quaglia is a globally recognized pioneer in the field of education, known for his unwavering dedication to school voice and aspirations. Dr. Quaglia has been described by news media as the world's foremost authority on the development and achievement of student voice and aspirations. His innovative work is evidenced by an extensive library of research-based publications, prominent international speaking appearances, and a successfully growing list of aspirations ventures.

Among these ventures, Dr. Quaglia authored the School Voice suite of surveys, including Student Voice, Teacher Voice, Parent Voice, and iKnow My Class. His recent book, Student Voice: The Instrument of Change published by Corwin has become a best-seller and is receiving international acclaim. This past year he has published three other books, Teacher Voice: Amplifying Success; Principal Voice, Listen, Learn and Lead; and Aspire Higher.

Dr. Quaglia also co-founded and currently chairs the Aspirations Academies Trust, a sponsor of primary and secondary academies in England built upon his aspirations research. Most recently he has founded the Teacher Voice and Aspirations International Center, dedicated to amplifying the voice of teachers in order for them to realize their aspirations and reach their fullest potential.

Dr. Quaglia earned his bachelor's degree at Assumption College, a masters degree in economics from Boston College, and master of education and doctorate degrees from Columbia University, specializing in the area of organizational theory and behavior. He has been awarded numerous honorary doctorates in humanitarian services for his dedication to students. Dr. Quaglia's work has also led him to serve on several national and international committees, reflecting his passion for ensuring that students', teachers', and principals' voices are always heard, honored, and acted upon.
